“Are you sure you want to do this?” I asked, as I slipped off my apron in the Burger Bar.

The lunch rush had ended, and the tables had emptied out in the interim. Those who still lingered sipped coffees and read on their Kindles or out of paperbacks. Martin, the other waiter, stood in the corner, his gaze sweeping over the restaurant. He was a far better waiter than I could ever be—attentive, definite manager material.

“Yes, I’m sure,” Grizzy said. “I’m coming with you. I need to get used to doing things that put me out of my comfort zone. Besides, Martin will take care of the place while I’m gone, and it’s nowhere near the dinner rush.”

“If you say so.” We left the Burger Bar and moved into the sunshine on the sidewalk. Cars drove by at their leisure, and folks who weren’t in their stores, manning the front desks, walked down the street window shopping or stopping to chat with other residents.

A bus pulled up next to a stop, its doors snapping open to accept passengers headed out of Sleepy Creek and letting others off. That had been me a short while ago—funny, it felt like years had passed since that day.

“So,” Grizzy said, as she joined me, “what time is your appointment with Dr. Rich?”

“In about a half hour,” I replied.

“Good, that gives me more than enough time.”

“Time for what?”

“To get a leash on Curly Fries, of course. She needs her walk.”

I blinked at my friend. “Her walk?”

“Yes, of course.”

“Griz, we’re going to interview a doctor about his dead wife,” I whispered. “I don’t think bringing Curly along is appropriate.”

“Weren’t you the one who pointed out how fat she’s getting?”

“Yes, but—”

“And isn’t it true that she should walk more if she wants to lose weight?”

“Yes, but that’s hardly—”

Griz raised her index finger. “And isn’t it true that we’re not even supposed to be asking questions and the fact that we are is, in itself, pretty inappropriate?”

I cleared my throat.

“Exactly. Bringing Curly along doesn’t make a difference.”

“Fine. But I’m not happy about it. If she steps on my toes, she’s never coming on another trip with me again.” I meant that both literally and figuratively.

“You don’t have the authority to make that call, unfortunately.” Grizzy gave me a cheeky grin as we set off down Main Street, heading toward suburbia. The sights and sounds of the town surrounded us, and I let the warm atmosphere wash over me. It was the way of Sleepy Creek.

Secrets, yes, but the hospitality was there too. People smiled and waved at us, even though a murder had happened only a few days prior. They cared around here, and it was a nice change of pace after living in the city for such a long time.

That wasn’t to say people in the city didn’t care, it just wasn’t at this level.

You’re not getting soft are you? Remember, this is a vacation.

We reached Grizzy’s double story with its brick face and sash windows, and I waited outside while she darted in to get the cat on a leash.
